Surface soil organic carbon sequestration under post agricultural grasslands offset by net loss at depth

چکیده

Post agricultural grasslands are thought to accumulate soil organic carbon (SOC) after cultivation cessation. The Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) in the U.S. is a wide-scale, covering approximately 8.9 Mha as of 2020, example row-crop grassland conversion. To date, changes SOC stock CRP lands have mostly been evaluated at local scales and focused on surface 20–30 cm profile. Thus, we lack knowledge dynamics continental scale, especially subsurface soil, Rapid Carbon Assessment (RaCA) project most recent effort by United States Department Agriculture (USDA) systematically quantify C 0–100 profile across conterminous US. Here analyzed data from RaCA evaluate stocks both scale. We found there was no difference between croplands when comparing profiles, which indicates that sequestration insignificant overall. did find higher (0–5 cm). However, such levels cm) were offset lower (30–100 CRP. also humid warm regions may net because they much more compared with same regions. Whether caused legacy effects or result losses needs be verified long-term repeated sampling soil. This analysis highlights importance examining cessation accurately measure improve rates lands.

Carbon Sequestration on Mined Lands Supporting Abandoned Grasslands: Soil Organic Carbon Accumulation and Distribution

Reclaimed surface coal mines in the eastern United States are commonly revegetated with grasses and legumes. The productivity and carbon sequestration potential of the vegetation varies with the condition and nature of the mined site and soil. This study was conducted to determine the distribution pattern of soil carbon stock on 9 mined grasslands reclaimed after the passage of SMCRA in 1977. M...

Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration in Reclaimed Minesoils

Land disturbance during mining results in loss of soil organic carbon (SOC). Reclamation of minelands can lead to recuperation and sequestration of SOC. The SOC thus accumulated, not only replenishes SOC losses but may also offset additional carbon di-oxide (CO2) emission. The assessment of the above was done on a chronosequence of reclaimed minesoils comprising pasture with topsoil application...

Soil organic carbon sequestration and agricultural greenhouse gas emissions in the southeastern USA

Agriculture in the southeastern USA can be highly productive (i.e., high photosynthetic fixation of atmospheric CO2) due to warm-moist climatic conditions. However, its impacts on greenhouse gas emissions and mitigation potential have not been thoroughly characterized. This paper is a review and synthesis of literature pertaining to soil organic C (SOC) sequestration and greenhouse gas emission...

Soil carbon sequestration in prairie grasslands increased by chronic nitrogen addition.

Human-induced increases in nitrogen (N) deposition are common across many terrestrial ecosystems worldwide. Greater N availability not only reduces biological diversity, but also affects the biogeochemical coupling of carbon (C) and N cycles in soil ecosystems. Soils are the largest active terrestrial C pool and N deposition effects on soil C sequestration or release could have global importanc...
